Accessibility

Stories are for everyone who wants to read them, so every reader should be able to find the book, take a quiz and hear the soundtrack on this site.

Our goal

We are working toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, for this site. That is our target, not a claim that every page meets it today. Pages are checked with an automated audit before they ship, and we fix what it finds in the site’s own code.

What the site does already

• Keyboard: the menu, buttons, quizzes, soundtrack lists and forms work with Tab, Enter, Space and Escape. The first Tab stop is a “Skip to main content” link. On the 18+ quiz, keyboard focus stays inside the age check until you answer it.
• Screen readers: images have text alternatives, icon buttons have names, and every page has header, main and footer landmarks with one main heading.
• Colour and contrast: text is checked for contrast on light, dark and photo surfaces. The home page copy sits on a dark layer over the video so it stays readable. Links in paragraphs are underlined, so they do not rely on colour alone.
• Motion: the home-page video has a Pause button. If your device is set to reduce motion, the video stays paused on a still image and the scrolling announcement and animated button text stop.
• Sound: nothing plays sound on its own. Music starts only when you press Play.
• Zoom: pages reflow at 200% zoom and on narrow phones without sideways scrolling.

Accessibility settings

The Accessibility settings button in the footer of every page opens a small panel. It changes only how this site looks to you:

• Text size: 100%, 112%, 125% or 137%.
• High contrast: darker text and stronger lines.
• Underline links: underlines every link.
• Readable font: switches to a plain system typeface.
• Larger cursor: a bigger mouse pointer, where your device supports it.
• Reduce motion: stops animation and the home-page video, even if your device setting is off.
• Reset to defaults clears them all.

Your choices are saved in this browser only (local storage). Nothing is sent to us. The panel adds comfort on top of the site; it is not what makes the site usable, and your own browser and device settings still work.

Known limitations

• Our checks so far are automated, plus keyboard checks. A full screen-reader pass (VoiceOver), and checks of error messages after a form is sent, are still to do.
• Soundtrack videos are YouTube embeds. Their captions and player controls come from YouTube, which we do not control.
• The “Buy the book” buttons use gradient lettering that automated tools cannot measure; we check it by eye.
• A few pages are still being written, so some details (such as shipping and contact information) are not filled in yet.
