Golem

Also known as gōlem

A humanlike figure brought to life from inert material through sacred knowledge.

Reference note

At a glance

A golem is an artificially animated being, commonly formed from clay or earth. Jewish traditions connect its creation with sacred language and extraordinary knowledge. Its role varies: servant, protector, or a creation whose power becomes difficult to govern.

Reference note

Tradition & history

The famous Prague legend associates a golem with Rabbi Judah Loew and the protection of the Jewish community. Golem traditions extend beyond that particular story. Methods of animation and deactivation differ between accounts; no single inscription or command describes every version.

Reference note

In fiction

Supernatural, season 8, episode 13, “Everybody Hates Hitler,” features a golem connected with the Judah Initiative and opposition to the Thule Society.
