Barghest

Also known as Barguest, Bargest

An ominous northern English apparition often described as an enormous black dog.

Reference note

At a glance

The barghest is commonly imagined as a threatening black dog with conspicuous eyes, teeth, or claws. Local stories place it in lonely landscapes and town streets. Its appearance may announce death or bring danger to the person who encounters it.

Reference note

Tradition & history

Yorkshire traditions associate the creature with particular places, including Troller’s Gill. The name has also been applied to other uncanny appearances, making its history broader than a single fixed canine description. Some accounts connect it with the death of a prominent local person and the gathering or howling of ordinary dogs.
