Church Grim

A supernatural guardian of a church or churchyard, often appearing as a black dog.

Reference note

At a glance

A church grim watches over sacred ground and protects it against disturbance or desecration. English accounts commonly give it a canine appearance, although other animal forms occur. Its protective purpose does not necessarily make an encounter reassuring: some stories also connect it with death omens.

Reference note

Tradition & history

Folklorists recorded explanations linking these guardians to an animal buried beneath a church or within its grounds. Related beliefs assign a watch over the cemetery to a buried human. These are recorded traditions and explanations, not proof that every associated burial custom occurred as described.
