Mutual Pining

Also known as Mutual yearning

Both people long for each other while the relationship they want remains out of reach.

At a glance

Mutual pining means romantic longing runs both ways. The characters may not realize their feelings are returned, or they may know and still be unable to act. What makes the pining mutual is reciprocity, rather than whether either person has confessed.

In reader conversations — invented example

“She saves the seat beside her for him. He arrives early just to get it. Each thinks the other is only being kind.”

Meet Winn and Lark.

Winn can feel everyone’s emotions. Lark gives her nothing. On a Texas ranch with monsters beneath the house, that silence might be the most dangerous thing she’s found.
