Romance Tropes

Also known as Romantic tropes, love tropes

The recurring setups, tensions, and relationship patterns that help describe a love story.

At a glance

Romance tropes describe recognizable patterns in a romantic storyline: friends becoming lovers, a pretend relationship turning serious, or two people wanting each other without saying so. Several can operate in the same book. A trope identifies part of the story, rather than explaining its entire plot.

In reader conversations — invented example

“They're friends to lovers, but they're also fake dating. The arrangement changes before either of them admits the friendship has.”
